A few simple rules keep every pup in Palm Beach County safe, and keep their people out of trouble. Here's the short version.
Rabies vaccine
Florida Statute 828.30 says all dogs, cats and ferrets 4 months of age or older must be vaccinated against rabies, with a booster 12 months after the first shot. Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control adds that after that booster, shots are due every 1 or 3 years depending on the vaccine label.
County license tag
Dogs and cats 4 months and older must be current on both rabies and a Palm Beach County license tag. The county lists the tag fee as $15 for a spayed or neutered pet and $75 for an unsterilized pet. Tags can be bought or renewed online through PetData (questions: 1-888-782-6057).
Leashes and where dogs can go
- Dogs are allowed in most county parks on a leash no longer than six feet.
- Dogs aren't allowed on county beaches (outside designated dog beaches) or at listed pools and nature centers. ADA service animals are exempt.
- Animal Care & Control says leash-law violations and missing rabies or license tags are among its most common citations. Fines can reach $500 per offense, though many first offenses are dismissed if fixed within 15 days.
The county's animal rules are in Ordinance 98-22 (Chapter 4). For anything specific, call Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control at (561) 233-1200.
